Summary:
A compilation of research findings produced by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) that summarizes 30 years of U.S. based clinical experience with methadone maintenance treatment for opiod addiction. The authors provide a history of opiod addiction treatment in the U.S. and list major research studies investigating the effectiveness of methadone maintenance treatment. Section 1 answers frequently asked questions about safety and efficacy of methadone treatment; Section 2 includes a detailed list of references; Section 3 is a number of supplemental articles; and Section 4 includes visual and suggested commentaries to compliment the answers to the questions in Section 1.
