Summary:
This document is one component of a larger binder containing resources for mental health consumers and people with disabilities. The document was produced by the Vancouver Women's Health Collective (VWHC), through its Community Health Advocates project. The information in the document includes some analysis of the stigma that people who have experienced mental health problems may face, as well as a listing of mental health clinics, depression resources and mental health advocates in the Lower Mainland. There is also a sample patient's rights workshop for mental health consumers. The document includes analysis of the experiences of disabled women with health care, particularly the assumptions made by health care practitioners and care-takers about women with disabilities. A list of patient's rights and tips to help disabled women get the most out of their trip to the doctor are included. Finally, information about the Mental Health Act, the Patients Property Act, and the New Adult Guardian Legislation is described in detail.
