AIDS Vancouver

The handbook provides an introduction to AIDS Vancouver and volunteerism at the agency. The first half of the handbook includes: an overview of the agency – its history; guiding frameworks and values; organizational structure; key program and service areas; current priorities; as well as its continuing leadership in the HIV community. The second half of the handbook provides new, current and prospective volunteers with insight into the value, participation and meaningful impacts of volunteerism. Each section presents current information, key findings, facts and opportunities to reflect on the content offered. Relevant materials, a comprehensive glossary and a resource list are also included.

The manual provides a detailed account of the peer-based qualitative research process that the Man to Man Program at AIDS Vancouver has developed in conjunction with our research consultant, Terry Trussler. The manual is intended for anyone working in the field of gay men’s health or gay men’s HIV prevention and looking for new approaches to the work, and to engaging their community. It is also relevant for people in other fields who are looking for innovative and empowering ways of conducting research while building community capacity.

The handbook provides an introduction to HIV/AIDS and its many related issues and complexities. Sections include: a history of AIDS Vancouver; The basics - the immune system, stages of HIV, transmission; Human impacts - statistics, stigma and discrimination, vulnerability, sexual health; Know how to prevent - HIV prevention, HIV testing, treatment options, sexually transmitted infections (STIs); About positive living - human rights and legal issues; and Where to go for more information. Each section presents key information and trends, current findings and research, and local and global facts. The handbook also includes relevant materials, a comprehensive glossary and a resource list.
