The manual makes connections between women's lives and social determinants of health, and women's use of alcohol and prescription drugs. It uses accessible language to address structural and cultural differences between the way that women and men are treated, and the ways that women use alcohol and prescription drugs. This leaflet was produced by the Vancouver Women's Health Collective (VWHC) and handed-out at a demonstration in 2004, protesting the practice of cosmetic surgeons in BC to give away cosmetic surgery as a prize in a contest. The VWHC was critical of the role of medical professionals in perpetuating a sexist, profit-driven practice. They interrogate the use of cosmetic surgery in society (to "fix" women who do not meet a pre-determined beauty standard), as well as the use of cosmetic surgery as advertising in contests like the Vancouver Extraordinary Makeover Event (2004).
